From January 2012 copyright on major works of James Joyce (1882-1941) was lifted by the European Union seventy years after his death. The UN General Assembly declared 2012 International Year of Cooperatives, highlighting the contribution of cooperatives to socio-economic development. In adopting Resolution 64/136 on 18 December 2009, the General Assembly noted that cooperatives impact poverty reduction, employment generation and social integration.
